Coaching Changes — Klein

Klein has found one of the best coaches in the state to take over for Stan Labay who retired at the end of the 2009-2010 school year after taking the Bearkats to the Class 5A Region II semifinals. Shane Hallmark who coached at Fort Bend Hightower for the last 2 seasons will be their new Head Coach.

Labay leaves Klein ranked #3 in all-time coaching wins at the school. His record at Klein over the last 7 years was 43-34-0. His other head coaching positions have been at Bellville (1991-1994 36-10-0 record), Pasadena Dobie (1995-1998 33-12-0 record) and Willis (1999-2002 24-20-0 record). He has an all-time record of 136-75-0.

Coach Hallmark takes over at Klein after just two seasons at Fort Bend Hightower. What a great two seasons he had though. The Hurricanes advanced to the Class 5A, Division I state championship game in his first season. Last season, they went 10-0 in the regular season for the second consecutive time before getting upset in the Area round. His record over the last 2 seasons was 24-2. Before coming to Hightower as the defensive coordinator in 2005, Hallmark coached in Klein ISD for 10 years.

Klein is in District 13-5A which is once again going to be a very tough fight. Other teams are Klein Collins, Klein Forest, Klein Oak, Spring, Spring DeKaney, Spring Westfield and Tomball.

Finalists for Houston high school football awards

The Touchdown Club of Houston’s annual RBC Wealth Management High School Awards Dinner, presented by Capital One and SportsRadio 610, is coming up Wednesday, Dec. 10, at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Houston. Each year, the club awards a series of awards to area players and coaches. The finalists for this year’s awards have been released and it is a who’s who of Bayou City area players and coaches.

The Touchdown Club of Houston will present the Greater Houston High School Player of the Year on Offense, High School Player of the Year on Defense, and the High School Coach of the Year at this annual event.

Also, the TD Club will give out the inaugural Ron Stone Award, which will be given annually in the late Ron Stone Sr.’s honor. This first recipient will be Ron Franklin of ESPN.

The TD Club’s blue-ribbon panel of high school coaches select the High School Player of the Year on offense and on defense. A blue-ribbon panel of high school athletic directors will select the Greater Houston High School Coach of the Year.

Cost is $45 per ticket. Tables are $450 (regular), $500 (bronze table sponsorship), $1,000 (silver table sponsorship), $1,500 (gold table sponsorship) and $5,000 (platinum table sponsorship). All tables are 10 seats each. Premium table sponsors get their names in the event’s paper program.
