Coaching Changes — San Antonio Lee
May 7, 2010
San Antonio Lee has hired Danny Kloza (for the second time) as their head coach and athletic coordinator. Kloza will replace Jimmy Ramos who resigned at the end of last season for health reasons.
Ramos is leaving after leading the Volunteers for 9 years with an overall record of 18-72.
Kloza comes over from San Antonio MacArthur where he was an assistant coach for the past six years. He has also has coached at San Antonio Lee and San Antonio Reagan and is a 1982 Lee graduate. Kloza was an assistant coach at Lee in 1993, the last time the Volunteers made the football playoffs.
Coach Kloza was first approved as head coach and athletic coordinator at Lee by the board of trustees on April 5th. But “interim” was added to his title when district officials reopened the job after discovering there was a “mix-up” in the education requirements posted for the dual position. The district listed a master’s degree as a minimum requirement when it advertised the job after Jimmy Ramos resigned. Kloza was hired despite having only a bachelors degree. The wording was changed on the posting to say a masters degree was a “plus” for the job, but not a requirement, making Kloza eligible for consideration. After reapplying for the position, Kloza was the screening committees unanimous choice again and his hiring was approved. So…Kloza was hired for the same job at the same school twice in one month.
Things are not good at Lee though. They now have 14 consecutive losing seasons and 18 consecutive non-winning seasons. The Volunteers have only finished above .500 four times in the past 30 seasons. Lee is also a member of a tough District 26-5A along with San Antonio Churchill, San Antonio Johnson, San Antonio MacArthur, San Antonio Madison, San Antonio Reagan and San Antonio Roosevelt.

Texas Stadium Will Be Missed
December 12, 2008

The last game this Saturday at Texas Stadium between Denton Guyer and Longview in the 4A state semifinal could be the final high school football game played there. The Dallas Cowboys have the stadium booked next Saturday, although a high school game could be played the night before.
The 5A Chmpionship games next week will be played at Reliant Stadium in Houston and the 4A Division II title game is already set for the Georgetown school district’s new stadium. That leaves the 4A Division II championship and the championships in 3A, 2A and 1A.
After Saturday night, Texas Stadium will have hosted 27 playoff games in a five-week span this year. The first high school game at Texas Stadium was played on Dec. 17, 1971 when San Antonio Lee edged Wichita Falls, 28-27, in the Class 4A state title game.
There have been 554 playoff games at Texas Stadium and around 700 high school games including regular-season contests played there.
The good news is the Cowboys say they intend to host high school games at the new stadium in Arlington.
The UIL seems interested in playing its 5A state title games next year at the new stadium. The 5A games are at Houston’s Reliant Stadium this year, but next year’s site has not been determined.
