District Races
2-3A had a surprising result when (2-6) Graham defeated (3-5) Brownwood. At the beginning of the season, we said this would be a district where a very good team would not make the playoffs. Right now, Abilene Wylie and Sweetwater are in great shape at 3-0. Brownwood, Snyder and Graham are all at 1-2. Brownwood and Snyder will meet up in week 10 and that could decide that 3rd playoff spot.
At the beginning of the season, everyone would have said 6-5A will be Southlake Carroll once again. Then the Dragons lost their first district game of the season to Coppell. The Cowboys have since dropped their next two district games. Lewisville Hebron leads this district with a 3-0 record and will host the Dragons in week 9. Flower Mound Marcus is another contender for the title at 2-1. Their loss was to Southlake last week 42-35.
The biggest game in 1A was a 22-1A match up between #10 Mart and #2 Bremond. Mart’s defensive forced six turnovers in a surprising 42-7 victory. Three very good teams will make the playoffs from here. Mart is 3-0 with Bremond and Normangee both sitting at 2-1. Mart and Normangee will match up in week 9.
What was probably the best game overall last week was #7 Cibolo Steele and #9 Kerrville Tivy. This game did lose some of its star power though when Steele’s star RB Malcolm Brown, the area’s leading Class 4A rusher, was a game-time scratch due to a sprained ankle he suffered last week. The game though was every bit a classic. Tivy edged the Knights 34-27 behind 436 yards from QB Colton Palmer. Tivy and Steele will both be playoff reps and another team should be San Antonio Alamo Heights. The Mules are 4-0 just like Tivy. They wrap up their season with games against both Tivy and Steele.
Other Happenings
Marlin football coach Jerry Malone has resigned his post at Marlin last week. The coach officially resigned for medical reasons. Malone, who was in his 16th season as the head coach at Marlin, compiled a 130-58 record at the school. He led the Bulldogs to the 3A Division II state championship game in 2003 and a 2A Division I regional final in 2006. However, Marlin missed the playoffs last year and had won just two of its first seven games this season.
Lake Highlands (5A 6-2) beat Dallas White 52-6. The Wildcats have now won five in a row and have outscored their opponents 208-47 in those games.
Duncanville (5A 5-4) started the season 0-3 but it was against some of the toughest competition available (Odessa Permian, Garland) and lost its starting QB for the season to injury. They have since turned it around and won five of its last six and have clinched its first playoff trip in four years. This is the first year at Duncanville for former Austin Lake Travis coach Jeff Dicus.
Euless Trinity (5A 8-0) has won three of its games by 10 points or less this season but they won their last two by a combined score of 94-7.
Game Of The Week
Highland Park and Royse City combined for over 1,000 yards of offense in their 10-4A match up. Highland Park gets a Lone Star Gridiron salute by converting on a 4th and one from its own 29-yard line to preserve a wild 46-43 win over Royse City. The Scots got the win even though Royse City QB Richard Morrison accounted for 500 total yards (291 passing, 209 rushing).
Streaks
Ingram Moore (3A) continued their state longest 29-game losing streak. Three of the Warriors’ four district losses have been by margins of 60 or more points. Canyon Lake, playing its first year of varsity football, edged Ingram Moore 21-14 in their district opener. They currently only have 18 varsity players and barely enough for a 2 win JV team. They still have a long way to go for the state record. Houston Davis (currently 7-0) lost 80 games in a row from 1985 to 1993 and Kountze came up short in 53 consecutive contests from 1977 to 1982. San Antonio Memorial dropped 51 straight from 1983 to 1989 and San Antonio Burbank endured a 50-loss skid from 1989 to 1993. Weirdly enough, Ingram (0-8) resides in District 8-3A, which has a team that has the states longest winning streak. Liberty Hill ran their winning streak to 33 in a row, beating Wimberley 49-21.
Galena Park North Shore travels to Baytown Lee to try and extend their streak to 77 straight regular season victories. The Ganders were the last team to beat North Shore in a regular season game.
