Coaching Changes — Austin Lake Travis

February 12, 2010

Austin Lake Travis has named defensive coordinator Hank Carter the new head coach. Carter coached under Morris at Stephenville and Lake Travis and has been part of his staff since 2000. He came to Lake Travis with Morris and has been a big part of the team going 32-0 since they arrived.

Coach Carter inherits a team that has won 3 straight state titles and is on a 46 game winning streak which ranks 4th all-time. The Cavaliers are also on a 6 year winning streak (all 8+ wins…before that no 8 + win season in the 20 years since the school opened in 1984).

It will be very tough to keep their winning streak alive this season. They have scheduled 2 very good teams to play against in their pre-district schedule. The Cavaliers will open up the season against Austin Westlake. Westlake was the Class 5A Division I Runner Up last season and was the last team to beat Lake Travis. Their second game of the season will be against Aledo who won the Class 4A, Division II championship last season. Their rival game is the “Bonfire Battle” vs Dripping Springs. Lake Travis only leads the series 9-7 since 1994 but the Cavaliers have won the last 7 in a row.

Notes:
Its time to figure out what life will be without Garrett Gilbert at Austin Lake Travis. Their will probably never be another Gilbert but JR QB Michael Brewer looks to be another great QB for the Cavaliers. He has good receivers and a good offensive line to help out. What people dont realize is that the defense is also very good. Crow and Lazarus will be tough to get past again this year. I am not sure that Lake Travis can make it 3 in a row but they will get close. Expect them to go 8-2 or 9-1 (yes they will finally lose a game) and go 2 or 3 rounds deep into the playoffs.

7 on 7 State Championship Division I Pool Breakdown (Pools A - D)

July 8, 2009

Here are the Division I State Championship pool breakdowns with stats, key players and of course my predictions. (POOLs A - D)

Pool A: Garland Lakeview Centennial, El Paso Bel Air, Klein, Austin Lake Travis

Garland Lakeview Centennial who is making their 2nd overall appearance will feature WR Brandon Hobody while RB Chris Avena will be the key player for El Paso Bel Air who is making their 1st showing. Klein is appearing for the 8th overall time and will be bringing a lot of talent. They will be led by QB Jamie Peebles, RB Patrick Johnson, TE Eric Tomlinson, LB Kevin Kisseberth, LB Alex Muddiman, DB Johnny Family and RB Dakota Barnes. Klein was a very impressive 5-0 vs. tournament teams during SQT play. Austin Lake Travis is making their 7th overall and 6th consecutive appearance making it to the Quarterfinals last year. Their key players will be JR QB Michael Brewer (son of former Longhorns quarterback Robert Brewer), LB Quinton Crow, DB Ian Lazarus, WR Andy Erickson and WR Conner Floyd. They were 3-1 against tournament competition. Even without Garrett Gilbert, Lake Travis is a threat

Mike’s Picks: 1. Austin Lake Travis 2. Klein 3. Garland Lakeview Centennial 4. El Paso Bel Air

Pool B:
Keller Central, El Paso Chapin, Langham Creek, Marble Falls

This pool features 2 newcomers (El Paso Chapin and Marble Falls), one 2nd year team in Keller Central. Langham Creek is the seasoned team here making their 5th consecutive appearance. Chapin will bring some star power with QB Anthony Campuzano (2045 yards passing in 2008), RB Cori Sanchez, WR Abel Rodriguez, DB Charlie Alva (7 INTs in 2008) and Isaac Prado (6 INTs). Langham Creek will be led by QB Will Bryant (2440 yrds passing in 2008), WR Mitchell Juergens (854 yards receiving in 2008) and LB Efrem Oliphant (Committed to Houston). They went 3-4 in SQT play but two of those losses were by only 1 point. Marble Falls will be relying on RB Austin Sparks and DB Justin Garcia. Again, you have to go with the experienced team.

Mike’s Picks: 1. Langham Creek 2. El Paso Chapin 3. Marble Falls 4. Keller Central

Pool C: Mansfield Legacy, Klein Forest, Lufkin, Mission

Mansfield Legacy is a 2nd year varsity program making their 1st appearance. They will be relying on WR Rodney Whitmore. Legacy had a 2-5 record vs. tournament teams in SQT play. Klein Forest is making their 5th overall and 3rd consecutive appearance. They have lots of talent and will be looking for LB Cameron Nwosu (Committed to Rice), WR/DB Adrian Bennett, WR/DB Damien Payne, ATH Harvey Williams and LB D.J. Simon to lead them. Klein Forest made it to the Quarterfinals back in 1999. They went 3-3 vs. tournament teams in SQT play but their 3 losses were by a combined 14 points. Lufkin is making their 10th consecutive appearance at the state tournament. As always, they will be bringing a lot of talent. DB Carrington Byndom (Committed to Texas Top 20 S in the nation), WR Quinn Trimble (55-1146 yards receiving in 2008), WR Tra Horace, WR Kasey Jones will all play key roles. Mission will be making their 2nd overall appearance. Lufkin will be very hard to handle.

Mike’s Picks: 1. Lufkin 2. Klein Forest 3. Mansfield Legacy 4. Mission

Pool D: Plano, Katy, New Braunfels Canyon, Beaumont Westbrook

Plano made it to the 2001 Semifinals and the Quarterfinals last year. This will be their 7th overall and 5th consecutive appearance. They will be led by a very talented group of receivers in WR Robert Robinson, TE Ashton Williams and WR Holt Hoetger. Plano finished 3-4 against tournament competition in SQT play. Katy made it to the 1999 Semifinals and the 2000 Quarterfinals and will be making their 11th overall and 8th consecutive appearance, only missing out on the 2001 tournament. This will be a very talented team led by RB Will Jeffrey (1483 yards rushing in 2008), QB Michael Stojkovic, WR Ryan James, TE Zachary Swanson (committed to Stanford) and DB Sam Holl. New Braunfels Canyon is making their 1st appearance and they will be led by WR/DB Tyler Figol while Beaumont Westbrook is making their 4th overall and 3rd consecutive appearance. Katy will be going for another state championship….this time in 7 on 7.

Mike’s Picks: 1. Katy 2. Plano 3. New Braunfels Canyon 4. Beaumont Westbrook

Pool A: Buda Hays Consolidated, Austin Travis, San Antonio Alamo Heights, Cedar Park

This pool will come down to the game between Buda Hayes Consolidated (1-2) in SQT play and Austin Travis (1st SQT this year). San Antonio Alamo Heights and Cedar Park have both already qualified.

Mike’s Pick: Buda Hays Consolidated

Pool B: Austin Akins, Lockhart, Kyle Lehman, Round Rock Stony Point

Lockhart (1-2) in pool play is the only non-qualified team in this pool to have seen any SQT action this year. Both Austin Akins and Kyle Lehman are participating in their first sQT of the year. Round Rock Stony Point has already qualified.

Mike’s Pick: Austin Akins

A&M Consolidated State Qualifying Tournament Pools

June 10, 2009

Here are the teams, pools, key players, stats and of course my predictions for the A&M Consolidated State Qualifying Tournament.

Pool A: A&M Consolidated, Mission Sharyland, Houston Bellaire*, Pasadena Dobie

A&M Consolidated has gone 6-4 this year in SQT play making it to the semifinals at the Austin Lake Travis SQT. They also have a loss to pool opponent Houston Bellaire (19-38). Houston Bellaire has been very active this year going 7-4 in tournament play. They have already qualified being the runner up at the Texans (Saturday) SQT. Pasadena Dobie is traveling out of the Houston area for the 2nd time this year. They have not competed in any Houston SQT’s. They went an impressive 3-1 at the Round Rock Westwood SQT making it to the semifinals before losing to Cedar Park. Mission Sharyland is making their first appearance at an SQT and will have a tough time.

Mike’s Pick: Pasadena Dobie

Pool B: Austin Anderson, Brenham, Montgomerey, San Antonio Brandeis

Austin Anderson has gone 3-1 in SQT play making it to the semifinals at the Round Rock Westwood SQT. Brenham has been a disappointing 1-5 this year but they may be able to keep up with this pool. Montgomery is 2-4 this year with their only two wins being against Texas City. San Antonio Brandeis will try their hand at SQT play for the first time.

Mike’s Pick: Brenham

Pool C: Bryan, Cy Creek, Lufkin, Katy Seven Lakes

Cy Creek is 6-6 this year making it to the semifinals at the Cy Falls and Texans (Sunday) SQT’s. Katy Seven Lakes qualified last week at the Katy Cinco Ranch SQT. Lufkin will be bringing some good talent as always. They will be led by WR Quinn Trimble (55-1146 in 2008). Bryan will be making their first showing this year but will have a hard time.

Mike’s Pick: Lufkin

Pool D: Tyler Lee, Round Rock, Austin Lake Travis, A&M Consolidated #2

This pool basically comes down to Tyler Lee vs. Round Rock. Austin Lake Travis has already qualified at the Round Rock Westwood SQT and the other team is the A&M Consolidated #2 team. Round Rock has gone 0-6 this year in SQT play. Tyler Lee will be making their first SQT appearance but will bring lots of talent. RB Da Da Brown (1235 rushing yards in 2008) and two TCU commitments, LB Blake Roberts and DB Chris Dinkins will lead the way.

Mike’s Pick: Tyler Lee

Semifinals:

Pasadena Dobie vs. Brenham

Lufkin vs. Tyler Lee

Austin Lake Travis State Qualifying Tournament

June 3, 2009

Here are the pools, stats, players to watch and of course my predictions for the Austin Lake Travis state qualifying tournament.

Pool A: Austin Lake Travis, Georgetown, Round Rock Stony Point, DeSoto

The host Austin Lake Travis has already qualified from an impressive showing at the Round Rock Westwood SQT. They are led by JR QB Michael Brewer. Georgetown was 1-2 before last weeks tournament. They will feature WR Adriane Rocha (70-857 yards in 2008). Round Rock Stony Point will feature some good athletes in WR Gerard Shillow WR (46-796 in 2008) and DB’s Desmond Martin and Kevin White. DeSoto has a ton of talent. The are led by Texas commit DB Adrian White, another Texas commit WR
Darius Terrell, RB Marcus Murphy, All-State LB Zachary Orr and DB Vincent Eddie.

Mike’s Pick: DeSoto

Pool B: Cedar Park, Round Rock, Belton, Dripping Springs

Cedar Park has already qualified being a runner up at the Round Rock Westwood SQT. Round Rock and Belton did not make it ouf of pool play last week at Waco Midway. Round Rock is 0-3 in other SQT play this year. Dripping Springs has also gone 0-3 in SQT play this year.

Mike’s Pick: Belton

Pool C: A&M Consolidated, Lampasas, Buda Hays Consolidated, Weslaco

A&M Consolidated has gone 3-3 in 2 Houston area SQT’s this year. Lampasas did not make it out of pool play last week at the Waco Midway SQT. Buda Hays Consolidated and Weslaco will both bring competitive teams.

Mike’s Pick: A&M Consolidated

Pool D: Houston Bellaire, South San Antonio, Copperas Cove, Brady

Houston Bellaire has already qualified being the runner up at the Texans Saturday SQT. They will try to flex their muscle behind the leadership of QB Adrian Nelson outside of the Houston area. Copperas Cove did not make it out of pool play last weekend but I keep picking them because of the talent they always have. 2A Brady will once again compete with the big boys. They qualified last year and won a trip to state in the Division I bracket.

Mike’s Pick: Copperas Cove

DeSoto vs. Belton

Round Rock Westwood SQT Pools

May 19, 2009

Round Rock Westwood will be hosting a 24 team 7-on-7 SQT this Saturday May 23rd. It looks like the best that Central Texas has to offer will be there. Three teams will qualify for the state championship that will be held at College Station in July. Here are the pools, key players and of course my predictions.

Pool A : Round Rock Westwood, Marble Falls, Dripping Springs, Lockhart

The host Round Rock Westwood should come out of this one. They will be led by RB Princeton Collins (1525 yards rushing in 2008 4.45 speed) and DB Tyson Brower. Lockhart will probably be their most difficult game with RB Dominique Hardaway (1974 rushing yards in 2008) leading the way. Marble Falls and Dripping Springs will keep things close.

Mikes Pick: Round Rock Westwood

Pool B : Hutto, Pflugerville Connally, Del Valle, Austin Anderson

This pool will feature two very good TE’s. Hutto has Nehemiah Hicks (6-3, 215, 4.7 committed to Texas A&M) and Austin Anderson will showcase Stanley Kurunwune. Pflugerville Connally will have WR Anthony Bryant and LB Zak Aossey leading the way for them. Del Valle will have a tough time in this pool.

Mikes Pick: Pflugerville Connally

Pool C : Cedar Park, Copperas Cove, Bastrop, New Braunfels Canyon

Cedar Park will be led by RB Darren Thornhill, LB Garrett Quick and LB Joey Nichol. The always dangerous Copperas Cove will feature RB Brandin Byrd (1061 yards rushing in 2008). Bastrop and New Braunfels Canyon will be behind these two teams.

Mikes Pick: Copperas Cove

Pool D : Georgetown, Pasadena Dobie, Killeen Harker Heights, Pflugerville Hendrickson

The 2007 7-on-7 Champion Georgetown will have one of the best WR’s of the tournament in Adriane Rocha (70-857 in 2008). Pasadena Dobie is traveling out of the Houston area and will be led by DB Maurice Poullard. Killeen Harker Heights will be relying on RB Kerry Sloan (1217 rushing in 2008). Pflugerville Hendrickson will try to keep things close.

QB Connor Wood gives verbal to Longhorns

February 18, 2009

Houston Second Baptist’s Connor Wood has committed to the University of Texas. The 6-4, 210-pound junior quarterback, entertained offers from schools including Oklahoma, Stanford, LSU and Georgia, but gave a verbal commitment to UT Wednesday night.

Last season, Wood threw for 2,248 yards and 20 touchdowns with just five interceptions while completing 62.8 percent of his passes. He guided the Second Baptist Eagles to a 9-3 mark and a TAPPS 4-II district title. With another year of high school remaining, Wood has already tallied 5,748 yards and 54 touchdowns.

The Longhorns appear to be in good shape at quarterback for a few years after signing Lone Star Gridiron’s #1 ranked QB, Garrett Gilbert (Austin Lake Travis) for this season, while Wood joins Colt McCoy’s younger brother, Case McCoy (Graham) as signal callers for the class of 2010.
