Klein has found one of the best coaches in the state to take over for Stan Labay who retired at the end of the 2009-2010 school year after taking the Bearkats to the Class 5A Region II semifinals. Shane Hallmark who coached at Fort Bend Hightower for the last 2 seasons will be their new Head Coach.

Labay leaves Klein ranked #3 in all-time coaching wins at the school. His record at Klein over the last 7 years was 43-34-0. His other head coaching positions have been at Bellville (1991-1994 36-10-0 record), Pasadena Dobie (1995-1998 33-12-0 record) and Willis (1999-2002 24-20-0 record). He has an all-time record of 136-75-0.

Coach Hallmark takes over at Klein after just two seasons at Fort Bend Hightower. What a great two seasons he had though. The Hurricanes advanced to the Class 5A, Division I state championship game in his first season. Last season, they went 10-0 in the regular season for the second consecutive time before getting upset in the Area round. His record over the last 2 seasons was 24-2. Before coming to Hightower as the defensive coordinator in 2005, Hallmark coached in Klein ISD for 10 years.

Klein is in District 13-5A which is once again going to be a very tough fight. Other teams are Klein Collins, Klein Forest, Klein Oak, Spring, Spring DeKaney, Spring Westfield and Tomball.

The Buckaroos have a great history having made six state finals and reaching the playoffs 38 times.

The UIL suspended former Katy Morton Ranch head coach Scott Svendsen and offensive coordinator Jeremy Orsagh for three years late in 2009. They also placed the school on probation for two years.

The two coaches and defensive coordinator Cody Haug were accused of violating UIL policies and Katy Independent School District concerning student records, misuse of funds and athletic eligibility. Haug was not summoned to the hearing.

The three-year suspension from all UIL activities in Texas is the maximum allowed under UIL guidelines.

Dave Meadows took over the Mavericks last season and they made it through a tough 1-9 season. Look for Morton Ranch and coach Meadows to get things straightend out in 2010.

Midlothian has found a replacement for Robby Clark who resigned as Head Coach after several of his players were involved in brawl. Lee Wiginton who coached 3A Mexia for the last 2 seasons will now take over.

Coach Clark leaves after 4 years with the Panthers. His 4 year record was 12-28 including 1-9 in 2009 with no playoff apperances. He has a 21-40 career record. Clark will be the offensive coordinator at Odessa Permian in 2010.

Lee Wiginton comes to Midlothian after posting a 17-7 record at Mexia over the last 2 seasons. He was 29-18 at 2A Comfort from 2004-2007 and was 29-18 at 1A Bosqueville from 2000-2003. His overal record is 75-43-0. Wigingtons teams have reached the playoffs eight of the last 10 years. During his last two years at Mexia, they were the District 19-3A champs and won first round games before being eliminated by Carthage and Gilmer.

This will be a very tough job for Wiginton. Midlothian is moving up to Class 5A for the first time in its history. They also have 5 consecutive non winning seasons and have only 1 winning season in the last 10. The Panthers will be competing in 5-5A which includes Cedar Hill, Duncanville, Grand Prairie, Mansfield, Mansfield Legacy, Mansfield Timberview and South Grand Prairie.

Palestine has hired Lance Angel to become their next athletic director and head football coach. Angel will replace Booker Bowie who retired after the 2009 season.

Bowie was going to retire after the 2006 school year but decided to work as an administrator at Palestine. After sitting out the 2007 football season which was the first time he was not coaching in over 30 years, Bowie became the interim athletic director when Glen Tunstall was reassigned in November 2007. He was given the official title of athletic director in January 2008. Before 2006, he was the defensive coordinator since 2002.

Coach Peach became one of only nine Texas high school coaches to win 300 career games in 2008. His 310-123-6 (71.30 winning percentage) all time record puts him at #7 on the all time coaching wins list. He was the first though to win all his games in Class 5A. He is one of only two coaches to win 300 games at one program (the other is Charlie Johnston — Childress).

His teams qualified for the state playoffs 19 times. Something to consider is that for his first 19 years, only a district champion advanced to the playoffs. The Vikings advanced to the 1990 Class 5A state finals where they lost to Aldine. They also made it at least four rounds deep in the state playoffs six times, playing in the state semifinals in 2000 and 2003. His teams had a 15 year playoff qualifying streak from 1988 through 2000 and won 16 district championships. In his four decades of coaching, he suffered only four losing seasons.

Eddy’s son, Scott Peach is head coach at Arlington High School. He won the head to head games with a 4-3 record.

Graham Head Coach Brad McCoy has resigned from his position. He will be taking a position at The Flippen Group which is a company that focuses on developing talent and organizational skills in terms of sports, business and education.

McCoy has coached the Steers for five seasons where he posted a 39-22 record. His teams went to the playoffs 3 time. He led them to the Class 3A Division II finals last season. Before coming to Graham, he was the coach at Jim Ned (53-19 over 6 years).

Coach McCoys sons all play football. Colt is a former University of Texas quarterback who is headed to the NFL. Case was the Graham quarterback for the last four seasons and just enrolled at UT. Chance played at Abilene Christian and has also just enrolled at UT.

McCoy wants to follow the playing careers of his sons closely and that would be very difficult trying to run a team.

Coach Carter inherits a team that has won 3 straight state titles and is on a 46 game winning streak which ranks 4th all-time. The Cavaliers are also on a 6 year winning streak (all 8+ wins…before that no 8 + win season in the 20 years since the school opened in 1984).

It will be very tough to keep their winning streak alive this season. They have scheduled 2 very good teams to play against in their pre-district schedule. The Cavaliers will open up the season against Austin Westlake. Westlake was the Class 5A Division I Runner Up last season and was the last team to beat Lake Travis. Their second game of the season will be against Aledo who won the Class 4A, Division II championship last season. Their rival game is the “Bonfire Battle” vs Dripping Springs. Lake Travis only leads the series 9-7 since 1994 but the Cavaliers have won the last 7 in a row.

Coach Satcher takes over after spending the last 6 years as an assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Clear Lake. Clear Lake made it to the state semifinals in 2004. He was also the offensive line coach at Bay City in 2003 when they were the State Runner-Up.

Eastwood has fallen on hard times with a 25 game losing streak and a 23 game district losing streak. The Troopers last win was against Oñate on Oct. 5, 2007. Their last district win was Sept. 14, 2007, over Socorro.

McKinney has found a replacement for Bobby Reyes who retired with a career record of 70-76. The Lions have hired Lake Highlands defensive coordinator Jeff Smith as its new head football coach.

Reyes leaves McKinney after going 11-21 over 3 years. He coached the 8 years previous to that at Richardson Pearce where he had a 52-33 record.

Smith takes over after being the Richardson Lake Highlands Defensive Coordinator for the last three years. He also was the offensive assistant at Lorena and at Plano. While McKinney struggled on the defensive side of the ball last year, Lake Highlands only allowed an average of 215 yards and 16 points per game under Smiths leadership.

McKinney will have a tough road ahead of them. With the new district alignment, they are now part of 10-4A that has teams like Dallas Highland Park, Richardson Pearce, Rockwall and Rockwall-Heath in it. To make things worse previously 5A Wylie dropped down to 4A and is also part of this tough district.

One transfer is Jarrad Stewart, a former standout safety from Pearland who spent last season at the University of Utah.

“We had Jarrad Stewart come in between semesters so we only had 12 scholarships to offer,” Wright said. “We talked to a lot of people who told us that he went to class, and worked hard. He just needed to be closer to his family. He is enrolled here and leading us through drills now.”

One of those 12 scholarships went to Thaddeus Watkins, a junior college offensive lineman from Diablo Valley College in California.

“Thaddeus is one of those guys whose best football is ahead of him,” Wright said. “He is 6’ 4” and up to 260 pounds. He looks like he weighs 180. He is going to fill out to 285-290 easily. He has quick feet and athletic. That is the type of player who you want to play at the tackle position.

The high school players include one of the nation’s Top 32 high school quarterbacks, a running back, three wide receivers, two tight ends, along with one defensive lineman, two linebackers and a defensive back.

The quarterback on the list is Tyler Arndt, who ESPN has listed as one of the top 32 quarterbacks in the nation and who threw for over 7,100 yards and 75 touchdowns during his high school career. Arndt also led Cuero High School to a 36-5 record during his career, including a 13-1 mark in 2009.

“Tyler is one of those guys who we feel very fortunate in getting when you see the list of schools that offered him,” said Wright. “We really feel he can come in here and be a difference maker right away if he can handle the mental part of it. He has all of the physical tools to be great quarterback. He is as big of a recruit that we have had around here.

“He has the complete package. He is 6’ 4”, weighs 205 pounds and completed 63 percent of his passes during his career. He took his team to the State semifinals three years in a row. Then you look at him reading a zone and pulling the ball down and out-running folks. He can do it all.”

The Bobcats signed three wide receivers in Michael Gilmore of La Marque, Deche Milburn of Clear Springs in League City and Marquis Walker from Austin Lanier., while, and Walker rushed for 986 yards. Milburn caught 81 passes for 1,378 yards and 16 touchdowns. Gilmore was named the District 24-4A Special Teams MVP.

“Deche is a bigger and stronger version of Cameron Luke, who was a pretty good receiver for us,” Wright said. “He is a physical receiver that when the ball is in the air, he just goes up and gets it. He is one of the best blocking wide receivers I have seen at any level. Cal was calling him during the week so we feel fortunate to get him as well.

“Michael Gilmore is the prototypical body type of an inside receiver,” Wright said. “What he can do is make you miss. He is an excellent punt and kickoff returner. Marquis is a guy who can stretch the field as a 10.5 guy.”

The running back is Terrence Franks of Angleton High School. Franks ran for 688 yards as a senior.

“Terrence Franks ran a time of 10.39 seconds in the 100 meters during AAU track last year,” Wright said. “We actually had Angleton’s highlights for the season and he was back-up to a player who signed with Missouri. When we were watching the highlight tape, all of a sudden, we asked ‘who was that’ when he was making a run into the line, jumped out to the left, and ended up running down the sideline for a touchdown. He might be a diamond in the rough for this class.”

The two tight ends are Trent Guiberteau of Taylor High School in Katy and David Lewis from King High School in Kingsville. Guiberteau was listed among the Top 25 recruits in the Greater Houston area and Lewis caught 22 passes for 320 yards as a senior. He also played quarterback and threw for 543 yards and rushed for 645 yards as well.

“We are looking to be more versatile and not so one-dimensional at the tight end position,” Wright said. “We want to have someone who can block, but also get out and run routes on passing plays. Both Trent and David are very athletic players who we feel will help us become more versatile.”

DeShun Williams is an All-State defensive lineman who helped lead Carthage High School to two consecutive State championships.

“We signed a bunch of defensive linemen last year, so we had targeted nose guards,” Wright said. “DeShun was the Player-of-the-Year in East Texas. For a defensive lineman to get that award, he has to be a special player. ”

The two linebackers are Drew Hamilton of Lake Dallas High School in Hickory Creek and Byron Hudson from DeSoto High School. Hamilton has been selected to play in the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star game in San Antonio, while Hudson averaged nearly 11 tackles per game while playing for former Bobcat record-setting running back Claude Mathis.

“The way Drew Hamilton runs and hits, he is what you want in a linebacker,” Wright said. “Byron was a quarterback and running back before moving to linebacker at DeSoto. He can definitely runs to the football and makes contact when he gets there.

The defensive back is Craig Mager, who played on both sides of the football at Luling. As a running back, he gained 814 yards and scored six touchdowns. He also caught 46 passes for 841 yards and 10 TDs.

“We are excited to sign him in that he is from right down the road in Luling,” Wright said. “He will start out as a cornerback because he is a physical player who can run. That is what we look for in a cornerback.”

Overall, Wright was very pleased with this year’s recruiting class even though he and his staff had just 12 scholarships to offer.

“We feel like we did good job in signing some players who have good character and can make us more athletic as a team,” Wright concluded. “When you have 25 scholarships, you can miss on one or two guys, but when you are offering only 12, you better get it right. I think our coaches did a good job in getting the right guys.”
