McCallum Knights’ head coach, Pat Honeycutt dies

January 31, 2009

Pat Honeycutt, who had led the Austin McCallum Knights longer than any coach , passed away on Friday. Early reports state that Honeycutt became ill during a McCallum basketball game and died later at St. David’s Hospital.

Coach Honeycutt came to McCallum from the Euless Trinity program where he was an assistant under legendary Trojan head coach John Reddell. Honeycutt’s record at McCallum is 96-82-1 over 17 seasons which made him easily the winningest coach in the program’s history.

Chaparrals Coach Retires

January 30, 2009

Derek Long, Austin Westlake’s head football coach and athletic director, has decided to retire.

Long led Westlake to 54 wins and one state championship game in his six seasons as head coach. He has been a coach at Westlake for the last 26 years. Derek became the Chaparrals’ defensive coordinator in 1992 and succeeded Ron Schroeder as head coach in 2003.

Long went 54-22 at Westlake, with three district titles and a trip to the 2006 Class 5A, Division I state championship game. The Chaparrals lost to Southlake Carroll 43-29 in the Alamodome.

Under Long, Westlake twice reached the state semifinals. He leaves the school second on the all time win list, trailing only Schroeder, who was 187-27-3 from 1987-2002.

The Chaparrals started the 2008 season 0-3 start but recovered to finish 9-5. They made it to the Class 5A, Division I quarterfinals, where they lost 24-21 to San Antonio Clark.

January 29, 2009

Tyrik Rollison who is rated as high as the nations #2 dual-threat quarterback has committed to Auburn. He is in the Top 10 players in Texas and in the Top 75 in the nation.

Rollison threw for 4,729 yards and 51 touchdowns during his senior season at Sulphur Springs. He added 1,094 yards on the ground with 14 more touchdowns. With these kinds of stats it was no surprise that he led the Wildcats to a Class 4A Division II state title.

Rollison joins Alabama Mr. Football, Leroy’s Clint Moseley, as the second quarterback of Auburn’s 2009 list of commits. The Tigers now have 22 commitments.

Auburn did not graduate any quarterbacks last season and will bring as many as seven, including six on scholarship, when August camp commences.
