Giddings Advances Past Rio Hondo
Football is a game of inches. Down 28-21 in the third quarter, the Rio Hondo Bobcats drove to the Giddings Buffalo 1-yard line and faced a fourth-and-goal. They went for it, but the running back was stopped just inches shy of the goal line and they turned the ball (and momentum) over to Giddings. Three plays later, the Buffaloes traveled 99 yards and were in the end zone for a two-touchdown lead they never gave up as they stopped Rio Hondo 42-28 at Gustafson Stadium in San Antonio.
The game started out with lots of big plays. Rio Hondo took the opening kickoff 69 yards and scored on Trevor David’s 4-yard TD run. Giddings answered right back with a 42-yard TD run by Eric Rimes (13 carries, 154 yards) on a wild play. Rimes had gained about 5 yards and was presumed down by nearly everyone in the stadium. However, Rimes got up and zipped the rest of the way untouched for the score. Though Rio Hondo and James argued the call, it was to no avail as the Buffs tied the game with 7:19 to go in the first.
It marked the final high school game for the electrifying Bobcat QB Joseph Vela, who finished with 77 yards rushing on the day to finish his senior year with 1,972 total.
Rio Hondo who finished at 10-3 won its second straight 32-3A title, as well as a bi-district crown and area title for the first time in school history.
The Buffaloes (10-3) move on to face the Bellville next week.
San Antonio Clark routs Mission Sharyland
San Antonio Clark scored 42 unanswered points to overcome an early seven point deficit and to eventualy beat Mission Sharyland 49-21 in the third round of the Class 5A Division I playoffs at the Alamodome. After surrendering a 7-0 lead on Sharyland’s second possession, Clark, which led 35-7 at the half, reeled off TDs on seven straight possessions.
Cougars running back Jock Tilghman, who entered with 1,945 yards and 24 touchdowns, finished with 229 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries — almost all of which came in the first half.
Clark (12-1) will play the winner of Saturday’s Austin Westlake-Harlingen matchup in the fourth round at 4 p.m. next Saturday at the Alamodome.
Allen outlast Permian
Tucker Carter, Allen’s reserve quarterback, filled in well for injured starter Matt Brown and led Allen to a 28-22 win over Odessa Permian in a 5A Division I Region I semifinal thriller Friday. He completed 10 of 16 for 199 yards and two touchdowns
Permian trailed by 18 in the fourth quarter but used two Sherard Ray touchdown runs to trim the lead. Ray scored three times in the second half – on runs of 11, 4 and 6 yards – and finished the game with 256 yards on 30 carries.
Permian outgained Allen by 163 yards and recorded seven more first downs.
Permian finished its season 12-1. Allen (12-1) will play Euless Trinity or Arlington next week.
Rockwall-Heath Defense Steps Up In Win Over Ennis
The Rockwall-Heath defense came up big during a 17-14 win over Ennis to carry the Hawks to the Class 4A Division II Region II final in its first year in the playoffs. The defense, led by defensive back Darius Jones, who had two interceptions, recovered four fumbles, intercepted four passes and stopped Ennis on fourth down twice in the second half. One of those was on ourth and goal, when Ennis tried four straight runs from the 1-yard line and couldn’t get in the end zone. They held Ennis (11-2) 30 points below its scoring average.
Star running back Kendial Lawrence injured his shoulder midway through the second quarter. The senior has rushed for 2,684 yards and 43 touchdowns this season.
Rockwall-Heath, which will play Sulphur Springs in the Region II final next week.
Everman Wins Big Over Big Spring
called it the toughest pass he’s ever had to throw.
Evermans QB Marcus McAdoo led the Bulldogs to a 38-point second quarter that eventually gave Everman a 55-15 victory against Big Spring on Friday. With a 46-15 at half, Everman coasted the rest of the way in the 4A Division II regional quarterfinal playoff game at Shotwell Stadium.
The Steers finish their season at 8-5.
The Bulldogs (13-0) on on their way to a fourth-round matchup against the winner of today’s Stephenville vs. El Paso Parkland game. If it is Stephenville, the game will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 at Waco ISD Stadium. If it is Parkland, it will likely be in Midland or Odessa next Saturday.
Waco Midway Holds Off Highland Park Rally
Highland Park’s gritty fourth-quarter comeback fell short in Friday’s 41-36 loss to Waco Midway Class 4A Division I Region II semifinal. Midway’s 35-17 lead late in the third quarter seemed safe But three touchdown passes by Highland Park junior quarterback Luke Woodley in the fourth quarter twice brought Highland Park within five points.
A near-capacity Tiger Stadium crowd watched an offensive show by Midway senior running back John Hubert and Woodley. Hubert ran for 282 yards and four touchdowns. Woodley passed for 308 yards and four scores (giving him 41 for the season).
Highland Park (11-2) had two touchdowns and a 2-point conversion negated by penalties, lost its starting quarterback for two series and trailed by 21 points but still made things exciting.
Midway (12-1) couldn’t relax until it recovered Highland Park’s second unsuccessful onside kick with 50 seconds remaining.
Midway will take a 12-game winning streak into the Region II final against the winner of today’s Carter-Longview regional semifinal. This is their first time since 1999 to make it to the fourth round for the playoffs.
Fort Bend Hightower Kicks It Past Katy Cinco Ranch
Hightower kicker, Jake Kane hit a 40-yard field goal in the fourth quarter against Cinco Ranch and the Hurricanes held on for a 24-21 victory Friday in the regional semifinals.
Hightower trailed Cinco Ranch 14-0 in the second quarter but bounced back and held off Cinco Ranch in the second half. Cinco Ranch (11-2) started off hot using a nice mix of running and passing behind quarterback Shane Ros.
Hightower finally found its offense and scored a touchdown in the second quarter, then added another n the third.
After Hightower quarterback A.J. Highsmith found Darius Johnson and Lydell Williams for the first two scores, the Hightower defense got it done when Jeremy Woodson picked off a Cinco Ranch pass and took it 42 yards for the score to take a 21-14 lead.
Cinco Ranch tied it at 21 when Trevor Holt blocked a Hightower punt in the fourth quarter. Cinco’s offense took over and scored from 16 yards out.
Kane finished it up with his game winning kick with 5:54 left in the game. He also had two game-winning kicks during last year’s playoffs.
Hightower (11-0) will play the winner of the Katy Taylor/Pearland game set for 2 p.m. today at Tully.

Bellville survives barn-burner with Sinton
November 28, 2008
SAN MARCOS - In a game that featured two teams that had proven to be bracket busters for predictions around the state, the Sinton Pirates and Bellville Brahmas played for the right to take on a Giddings squad that had knocked of Rio Hondo earlier in the day 42-28. In the end, it was the Brahmas of Bellville that continued their season with the 43-36 victory on the campus of Texas State University.
Sinton wasted no time taking the opening kickoff down the field and scoring on a 15 yard run by QB Josh Harrison. Less than two minutes had elapsed and the Pirates led 7-0. Bellville responded with an action-packed drive led by their impressive signal caller, Kyle Mueller. The drive stalled as they neared the endzone and when Bellville missed a 41 yd field goal.
Later in the first, the Brahmas started off strong moving the ball from their own 36 on 5 straight running plays down to the Sinton 21 and then uncorked a pass from Mueller to Spencer Honeycutt down to the 3. One play later, Quentin Runnels carried it across for the score. A blocked PAT left Sinton in the lead 7-6 with 3:45 remaining in the first.
The very first play after the ensuing kickoff, Harrison was sacked, fumbling the ball in to the hands of Bellville DB, Jake McNeil. Kyle Mueller couldn’t find an open receiver on first down, was flushed out of the pocket and scrambled the 21 yards in for the score. A missed two-point conversion saw Bellville leading 12-7, still in the first quarter.
The action kept going when Reno Renden returned the kickoff to the fifty yard line, giving Sinton their great field position. Richard Orta capped off the drive with a short scamper in for the score. Once again, Sinton regained the lead 14-12. The Giddings coaches showed up to see the score, and see that lead last all of one play because Bellville’s Quentin Runnels popped off a 76 yard TD run. Despite missing their third conversion, the Brahmas led 18-14 with just under 10 minutes to go in the first half.
Bellville stripped the ball from Sinton and had the ball back inside the Sinton 40 and the rout was on when Wayne Houston caught a short pass and ran it all the way for the score. Bellville finally hit a PAT and the lead extended to 11, 25-14. A quick three and out by Sinton gave Bellville the ball on their own 20. Bellville’s Josh Browning got in on the action this time as he caught a pass wide open over the middle and outran defenders 56 yards for the score. (Bellville 32, Sinton 14)
Just as it appeared that Sinton was ready to fold up and head home, the Pirates put together an impressive scoring drive combined with a two-point conversion that cut the lead to 10 (Bellville 32, Sinton 22) which is where it remained at halftime.
The second half saw Bellville come out conservative, running down the field and kicking a FG to extend the lead to 35-22 over Sinton. The third quarter came to an end with each team adding another score (Bellville 43, Sinton 29)
With just over 3 minutes remaining in the game, Sinton again showed life when they stripped Billy Carter of the ball and proceeded to move the ball to Bellville’s 9 yd line with three great passes and two QB runs up the middle. The zebras missed a pass interference call that would have give Sinton a 2nd and goal from the 4. The Pirates responded again with another scramble by Harrison had them 3rd and goal at the 3 with 1:46 remaining. A run up the gut by the fullback and the PAT cut the lead to 7 (Bellville 43, Sinton 36) setting up the onside kick with just 1:43 to go in the game.
Bellville recovered the onside kick after it bounced around for a while with 1:40 to go and Sinton with two timeouts remaining. Sinton got the ball back with 6 seconds left, but their last ditch hail mary came up short. Bellville moves on to face Giddings in the next round.
Playoff Week #3 Notes
November 28, 2008
.
.
.
.
* #18 1A Sundown gets another crack at a #4 Stratford team that knocked off the Roughnecks in Week 2, 44-10. Stratford has allowed just 26 points in its last four games. The Elks have played for three state championships in the last eight years and been to the semifinals two other times.
* Wolfforth Frenship gets a return match against Denton Ryan from a state semifinal playoff loss at Texas Stadium back in 2000. Since 2005, Frenship that has been to two state semifinal appearances and a regional final shot in 2007.
* Saturday’s game against Cisco will be the third playoff game this season for Roosevelt, equaling the total number of games played from 1973 to present.
* The Division I state quarterfinal between Clyde (11-1) and Muleshoe (12-0) at Wolfforth Frenship will be the biggest game in probably either schools history. Neither team has played in a championships game. Muleshoe’s high-powered spread offense is averaging just under 49 points per game.
* The Stephenville Yellow Jackets started off 0-2 and had a 56-3 mid-season loss to Everman — but the are still playing. Last week’s 31-6 whipping of Wichita Falls Rider not only kept the Jackets’ season going, but it avenged back-to-back season-ending losses to the Raiders.
* They may not have the same frames but both of the quarterbacks from Alice and Austin Lake Travis win games. Alice’s senior quarterback A.J. Benavides has led his team to an undefeated record (12-0) and to the third round of the playoffs for the first time since 1999. They are set to face defending state champion Austin Lake Travis (12-0) and their prolific passer Garrett Gilbert in a Class 4A Division I regional semifinal Friday night at the Alamodome. Gilbert, who at 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds has passed for 3,630 yards and 43 touchdowns with only three interceptions in 320 attempts The 5-9, 150-pound Benavides is 159 of 264 for 2,145 yards and 26 touchdowns with only seven interceptions.
* The #33 Sunray Bobcats (7-4) may not have a great record but they are battle tested. They made it through a brutal District 1-1A to take the third playoff spot behind #4 Stratford and #7 Canadian, which was the pre-season #1 team. The will suit up for a Class 1A Division II regional semifinal against 12-0 and fifth ranked Iraan this weekend. Their preseason schedule was pretty tough, as all five teams made the playoffs.
* #4 Odessa Permian has outscored its opponents 118-35 in the first two rounds of the playoffs, but El Paso El Dorado and Burleson were fourth-place teams in their respective districts. Allen will be a much tougher challenge. The Eagles (11-1) are ranked currently the fifth ranked team. Allen lost to #1 Euless Trinity at home, 24-14 this year.
* The Katy Tigers are joined by Cinco Ranch and Katy Taylor in the regional semifinal round of the football playoffs this year, marking the first time Katy ISD has had three teams advance to the third round. For the first time since 2002, the Tigers didn’t win the district title. Cinco Ranch (11-1), won it for the first time in its school history. Another sign of the strength of Katy ISD was its record against non-Katy ISD schools, a combined 19-5. Nobody had a losing record coming into district.
* The Longview Lobos have returned 6 INTs for TD’s this year
* Last season, the Arp football team’s dreams of reaching the state semifinals ended in heartbreak fashion. During the final moments of a quarterfinal with Elysian Fields, the Tigers fell victim to a Hail Mary touchdown and 19-13 defeat. The Tigers last reached the semifinals eight years ago. They will be playing a very tough Kirbyville team. Kirbyville is in the third round for the second straight season. The Wildcats, who went 11-3 in Class 3A last year.
* Waco Midway Panthers’ defense is playing lights out. In the last five games, all against teams that made the playoffs, Midway has held the opposing team to an average of 18.6 points below its season pace. Forney was scoring 37 points per game before Midway held the Jackrabbits to 12. Last week, a Texas High offense that had put up 39 per game managed just 10 against the Panthers. So now, Midway (11-1) steps up to face one of the most offensively productive programs in the state when the Panthers play Highland Park (11-1).
