Richland Rebels win NATIONAL 7-on-7 Championship!

July 31, 2008

The most unlikely champion in Texas 7-on-7 State Championship history not only swept to a perfect record in College Station earlier in the month, but they have put the icing on their offseason football cake by winning a National Championship in Atlanta.

We all know they toughest competition they faced all season was here in Texas, but things didn’t look good for the Rebels early on.  After starting the tournament 1-3 on day one, pretty much everyone had counted Richland out.  In a role that suits them fine (unlikely champion) they stormed back giving up only 20 points day two including an amazing 32-0 shutout in the title game against Jupiter Christian of Florida.

A big Lone Star Gridiron CONGRATULATIONS once again to the Richland Rebels - our new 7-on-7 National Champions.

Change In 2008 Champions Classic

The lineup for the 2008 Champions Classic that is held in Abilene has changed.   The original schedule had Abilene playing Glades Central of Belle Glade Florida and Archbishop Riordan of San Franciscso playing Abilene Cooper.   The Florida and California schools were not able to get sponserships to cover the teams travel expenses so they were forced to cancel.

The revised schedule is :

August 28th — Odessa Permian vs. Duncanville

August 29th — Abilene vs. Fort Worth Dunbar

August 30th — Abilene Cooper vs. Fort Worth Wyatt

All games will be played at Abilene Shotwell Stadium for this 4th year event.

Arlington Lamar’s 7on7 run ends

July 26, 2008

The Vikings of Arlington Lamar made it to the quarterfinals of the National Select 7-0n-7 Championships held in Birmingham, Alabama, but lost a couple of close ones to McGill-Toolen Catholic (18-14) and Evangel Christian Academy (24-22.)

Arlington Lamar finished with a 7-3-1 record at the tournament which brought their summer record to 39-6-2. The Vikings would have liked to add a couple big tournament championships, but a nearly 83% win rate is an amazing feat in itself.

Arlington Lamar To Compete In National 7-on-7 Tournament

July 24, 2008

The Arlington Lamar Vikings are traveling to Birmingham Alabama this Thursday through Saturday to compete in the 64-team National Select 7-on-7 Championship Tournament to be held at Hoover High.

Lamar is one of the top 7-on-7 programs in the state.  The Vikings and Colleyville Heritage are the only teams in Texas that have qualified for every state championship tournament (1998-2008). They are 27-9 at state championship games and have been in the final four three times.

Lamar is 31-4 this season, including the state tournament where they fell in their second consecutive semifinals appearance at the FSN Southwest 7-on-7 State Championships in College Station two weeks ago. They lost by a combined total of 2 points in those two semifinal losses.

Three Vikings were named to the all-tournament team at the FSN Southwest 7-on-7 State Championship Tournament.

Lamar relies on money from fund-raisers and corporate donations (nearly $6,000 total) to travel to the Alabama event, held at the school made famous through the MTV show Two-A-Days.

Steroid results reveal good news

July 23, 2008

2007-08 UIL Anabolic Steroid Testing Report

The UIL Anabolic Steroid Testing Report for the 2007-08 school year has been released by the UIL. The statistical report of the testing program that took place between February 2008 and June 2008 includes information such as the total number of tests conducted, the number of positive results and the breakdown of student-athletes tested by sport and gender.

Of the 10,117 tests conducted, there were two (2) confirmed positive results and four (4) unresolved test results. The four unresolved results were reported from the laboratory with Testosterone: Epitestosterone (T:E) ratios greater than 6:1. Follow-up tests are being conducted on the four unresolved cases. Once the follow-up tests are completed, the final results of those tests will be reported as either positive or negative.

For Testosterone, the definition of positive depends on an adverse analytical finding (positive result) based on the methods listed in the UIL Anabolic Steroid Testing Program Protocol which shows that the Testosterone is of exogenous origin, or if the ratio of the total concentration of Testosterone to that of Epitestosterone (T:E) in the urine is greater than 6:1, unless there is evidence that this ratio is due to a physiological or pathological condition.

Additionally, there were twenty-two (22) protocol positive results. These protocol positive results occurred as violations of the UIL Anabolic Steroid Testing Program Protocol. Eighteen (18) of these violations were the result of unexcused absences, three (3) were due to refusal of the student-athlete to participate in the collection process and one (1)student-athlete violated protocol by leaving the testing area without cause or approval.

Of the 195 schools where tests were conducted, 6,455 boys were tested representing 12 sports and 3,662 girls were tested representing 12 sports. The sports with the most student-athletes tested were football for males (3,380) and volleyball for females (835). The total number of student-athletes tested for each sport, includes multiple sport participants. Therefore, the individual sport numbers will differ from the total number of athletes tested. Overall, there were 3,454 freshmen student-athletes tested, the most of any grade level.
